This course emphasises students’ acquisition of the literacy level of spoken French through dialogues, debates and storytelling.
FRN 112 PHONETICS 3R
This is an introduction to phonetics and phonology of modern-day French; a simple introduction to phonemes, rhythmic patterns, intonation, accentuation and liaisons.
FRN 113 LABORATORY 1 3R
This course studies structural forms that present problems for English-speaking students with Nigerian Languages as mother tongues. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of sentence patterns, vocabulary, and writing techniques.
FRN 114 GRAMMAR & COMPREHENSION I 3C
The course emphasises elementary grammar, conjugation of verbs, syntax, tenses, lexis, and adjectives. It is also an introduction to basic French structure, dealing with verb types, adverbs, sentence types, tenses and their uses.
FRN 115 COMPOSITION 3E
It is a study of composition writing emphasis on narrative and descriptive forms. U also aim at the development of writing skills in letter-writing and short story writing, on a variety of topics.
FRN 121 INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN LITERATURE 3C
Emphasis will be laid on oral and written African Literature through major works in francophone Africa with special reference to the birth of Negritude.

The course is a survey of major landmarks, movements and trends in French Literature from the Middle Ages to the present time.
FRN 124 INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH METHODS 3C
It is an introductory course in the methodology of French Language Teaching, i.e. as a foreign language in Nigeria. This course delves into some fundamental principles of foreign language teaching situations.
It treats in detail the organisation and presentation of French language lessons to a group of beginners. Here, students are supposed to learn how to write lesson notes in French and how to carefully choose relevant teaching aids/materials.
YEAR TWO
FRN 211 GENERAL LINGUISTICS 3C
The course introduces students to the study of particular languages (as ends in themselves) to be able to produce complete and accurate descriptions of them. Students, through the study, will be able to obtain information about the nature of language in general. Essentially, the following will be studied:
Definition of linguistics/language, Features of Language. Approaches to Linguistics study from Traditional to Modern Language Families. Language is a means of human communication. The science of linguistic description.
Conventional divisions and the rules of setting them up – phonology, morphology, syntax, and division’s man communication. The science of linguistic description. Conventional semantics, including the study of sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics.
FRN 212 ORAL EXPRESSION, VOCABULARY AND DICTATION 3C
The course is a contribution of FRN 111 and it aims at giving more intensive exercises in everyday conversation French, Oral appreciation of simply selected passages, a dramatisation of short, simple selected passages, a dramatisation of short plays, storytelling, recitals and dialogues.
FRN 213 LABORATORY 11 3R
The course is otherwise called “Travaux Pratiques”. Emphasis is on exercises based on sentence patterns and on Automatic responses to simple questions. It is also a continuation of FRN 113.
FRN 214 GRAMMAR 7 COMPREHENSION 3C
This course is a continuation of FRN 114. Emphasis will be on the characteristics and uses of various grammatical categories and sentence elements. Emphasis will be on the practice and identification of verb forms, sentence structures and grammatical functions. The course emphasises the acquisition of vocabulary through familiarity with more complex written texts for analysis and appreciation.
FRN 215 PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY 3R
The course is a continuation of FRN 112. It includes the students to the physiological and acoustic characteristics of French sounds and the phonological system of French from a synchronic point of view. Attention will also be paid to the norms in the pronunciation of modern French.
FRN 221 FRENCH METHODS 3C
This course deals with problems associated with the teaching of French as a foreign language with special reference to the Nigerian scene. Examination of various teaching methods with emphasis on the current Audio-Visual communication Methods, Nouveau San Frontiers, Pand anorama.
FRN 223 LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAMME 3E
All students of French are required to spend a minimum of three months in a planned program of study in a French-speaking environment.

FRN 311 FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION 3C
The course is designed to provide a general theoretical background to language study. Areas of focus include Communication, Definition and scope, Human Language and animal communication. FRN 312 FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE CIVILISATION 3R
The main objective of this course is to examine different aspects of French and francophone culture and civilisation and their effects on the modern French man and the Francophone world. Among such aspects are the French and Francophone culinary culture, mode of dressing, leisure (care, parks, sports, cinema, family, and education much as possible to compare these features with Nigerian cultures and civilisation.
