HIS 113 EGYPT AND THE NILE VALLEY 3E
This course focuses attention on early Egyptian civilisation, Pharaonic Egypt, the early history of Ethiopia, and the early civilisation in the Nile valley.
HIS 114 SOUTHERN AFRICA TO 1800 3R
This is a course that focuses attention on the people and states of Africa, South of the examination of Southern Africa. Socio-economic developments are shaped by internal and external factors.
HIS 115 EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICA TO 1800 3R
The course focuses on the early history of East and Central Africa. It starts with a general survey of the area that affects the indigenous people of the area. It examines the dynamics of state formation in the area with a discussion of external contacts with the indigenous peoples. The impacts of such contacts are examined.
HIS 116 NIGERIA FROM THE EARLIEST TIME TO 1800 3C
The course examines the main sources of Nigerian history and the importance of the three major civilisations, Igbo-Ukwu and Nok, in the history of Nigeria. It further examines the rise and growth of empires and kingdoms. Both in the North and West, and the confederate states of the Niger Delta area and Igboland. The course also discusses the inter-ethnic relations among Nigerians before 1800.
HIS 121 WORLD HISTORY TO 1750 3R
This is a general survey course. It examines selected topics in World History up to 1750. It is designed to familiarise students with the major trends in the development of man and civilisation.
HIS 122 NIGERIA SINCE 18003C
This course is a continuation of HIS 116 with emphasis on the collapse of the early Empires and kingdoms. The Islamic revolution in northern Nigeria and its impact will be discussed. The course will also discuss the nature of European influence and its impact on the history of the indigenous people.
HIS 123 EUROPEAN CONQUEST AND AFRICAN RESISTANCE 3R
The course aims to highlight the occupation methods of European penetration and colonisation of Africa. It also aims at making students appreciate the efforts of the Africans in resisting European incursion.
HIS 124 MAGHREB FROM 1800 3E
This course will examine the history of the Maghreb in the 19th and 20th Centuries in the Maghreb. This is with an emphasis on the external influence of Arabs on both the process of colonisation and decolonisation, respectively.y

This course aims to highlight the gradual development of white domination and the apartheid policy in South Africa. Africa. The complex nature of political development, which gave rise to different types of nationalism in South Africa and the black movement for the establishment of majority rule, will be dealt with

This course aims to give scope for the extensive study of contemporary East and Central African history. Emphasises the history of indigenous peoples and their political, cultural and socio-economic developments. It will also endeavour to examine the impact of European imperialism in the sub-region.

The course is aimed at exposing the students to the importance of history and the significance of Primary sources in the study of history. It is also aimed at familiarising students with the methods of collecting historical information and assisting them in analysing and interpreting the information collected.

The course focuses the attention of students on the political and economic implications of European contact with West Africa from the beginning of the 19th century. It also examines the progressive development of the colonial situation in West Africa and the reactions of the indigenous people to such development.
HIS 213 EGYPT AND THE NILE VALLEY SINCE 1800 3E
This course aims to make students understand the experience of the indigenous communities around this area in repulsing various forms of imperialism. It also attempts to make students understand the problems of sustaining their independence and sovereignty in the era of aggressive European imperialism.

The course aims to familiarise students with the processes of decolonisation of colonial America and the problem of nation-building in post-independent America. It also examines the major socio-economic and political developments that saw America through the path of her emergence as a world power and her relevance to world politics.
HIS 216 REGIONAL AND LOCAL HISTORY 3R
The course is an in-depth study of the history of the Yoruba. An attempt is made to highlight the origin, growth and development of the Yoruba and the place of the Yoruba in the socio-economic and political evolution of the Nigerian state.
HIS 221 CHRISTIAN MISSIONARY ACTIVITIES IN WEST AFRICA 3C
The course examines Christian Missionary activities in West Africa with a special focus on the problems and achievements of the Christian missions. It also examines the consequences of Christian activities on the socio-political development of the indigenous people.

The course centres on the emergence of the Commonwealth as an international organisation. It includes a special focus on the historical antecedents and the impact of the organisation on member states in particular and the world in general.

This course aims to highlight the strategic position of this area with a special reference area. The course will also examine the origin of the Middle East crises and the efforts made so far to resolve them.

This course examines the attempts made in evolving a unified concept of nation-out, problems of religion, economic and ethnic fields are analysed with varying degrees of success.

The course examines the concept of 3rd World, developing/developed and underdeveloped in relation to industrialised states of Europe and North America. This course seeks to acquaint students with the origin and organisation of the trade and the reasons for its abolition in the 19th century. It examines the consequences of the internal and external slave trade on African societies and also the experience of Africans in the Diaspora. The course will lay much emphasis on their reaction to the circumstances of their environment and their contributions to development in their new home.

HIS 422 HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS FROM 1945 PRESENT DAY
The course emphasises important events such as the 2nd World War and the birth of the United Nations. The Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Arab-Israel relations, the Collapse of the USSR and post-Cold War world politics.
HIS 423 AFRICA IN WORLD POLITICS 3R
The course will acquaint students with the place of Africa in World politics. The course will highlight some of the problems of Africa as they affect world politics and the general relevance of the continent in international relations.

The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge of nationalism as an ideology and a movement with an emphasis on its origin, nature and manifestation in the country. It will also attempt a thorough examination of the objectives, influences, factors, problems, and achievements of nationalism in Nigeria.
HIS 425 PROJECT 4C
Each student will be required to write a long essay on a historical topic: the topic should be chosen after careful consultation with the members of the Department, and the essay should not be more than 6,000 words.
